A Day to Remember: Witnessing Elephants and Cultural Traditions in Maasailand

Writer's picture: Maria AriasMaria Arias

During my time volunteering in Kenya, I had some incredible experiences that I will never forget. One of the most exciting days was when the school closed because an elephant family was walking through Masai land and crossing our area. What really surprised me was that none of the kids had ever seen a real elephant before, so the school closed to let them see them. However, we were not allowed to get too close as the national authorities were looking after them since they had already destroyed parts of a nearby village.

I watched them passing by with the kids from the other side of the river, and I walked after them to see how the military killed one of the elephants. I watched as they removed the ivory from the elephant to prevent it from being stolen and sold in the black market. However, I also saw people taking and cutting the meat from the elephant to eat. Some were saying that elephants were sacred and they could not eat them, but others were very hungry.

This was such an adventure for me and my fellow volunteers from New York, and I don't think I will ever forget that day, as well as many other experiences I had there.

All of these experiences have helped me understand the importance of taking care of our earth and its animals. It has motivated me to do what I can in my everyday life and through my sustainable shop, Pichispink, to promote sustainability and reduce waste in the fashion industry.
